Building the Floor for Our DIY 5×10 Homemade Camper
With the Harbor Freight 5×10 Modular Trailer assembled, it’s time to move on to the next stage of our homemade camper project: building the floor.
The floor forms the foundation of our DIY square-drop camper. It needs to fit the trailer properly and provide a solid base for the walls and the rest of the camper structure.
On HomemadeCamper.com, we’re documenting the project step by step, sharing our videos, materials, and lessons learned as we turn a utility trailer into a camper.

Planning the Camper Floor
Before building a camper floor, it’s important to confirm the intended floor dimensions against the actual trailer frame and the planned camper layout.
For a project like ours, key considerations include:
- Measuring the trailer frame and confirming the planned floor footprint.
- Planning how the floor structure will be supported and attached.
- Choosing appropriate framing materials and sheathing.
- Considering the weight of the floor and the complete camper.
- Planning for moisture protection and the conditions the camper will encounter.
The finished floor must be designed for the actual trailer and camper loads. Follow the trailer manufacturer’s limits and use suitable construction methods and materials for your design.
Building a Solid Base for the Camper
The floor is the starting point for the camper body. Careful measuring and fitting at this stage helps prepare for the next steps, including framing the walls, installing the roof, and finishing the interior.
Our build video shows the work involved in this stage of the project. Watch along to see how we approach the floor as part of the larger DIY camper build.
What’s Next?
Once the floor is complete, we’ll continue with the camper body and the remaining construction stages. Follow our Camper Build page to explore the series, watch the videos, and find future updates.
If you’re planning your own homemade camper, use our project as a reference while checking dimensions, weight limits, and construction requirements for your own trailer and design.
