Building a homemade camper starts with a solid foundation, and for our DIY square-drop camper project, that foundation is a Harbor Freight Haul-Master 5 × 10 modular utility trailer.

In this video, I take you through the trailer build, from unboxing the components and assembling the trailer to getting it ready for the road. This trailer will serve as the foundation for our homemade camper, so getting this stage right is an important first step in the project.

If you’re considering building your own camper, converting a utility trailer into a camper, or simply want to see how the Harbor Freight 5 × 10 trailer comes together, follow along as we get this project underway.

Why We Chose a Harbor Freight 5 × 10 Trailer

For this project, we wanted a trailer that could serve as the base for a homemade square-drop camper measuring approximately 5 feet wide and 10 feet long.

Using a utility trailer as the starting point gives us a platform for building the camper body, installing the floor and walls, and adding the features needed for comfortable camping.

Before choosing a trailer for your own build, consider its dimensions, payload capacity, finished camper weight, tongue weight, and the towing capacity of your vehicle. Remember that the weight of the camper body, battery, electrical system, equipment, and camping gear all contribute to the final loaded weight.

Always check the manufacturer’s specifications and make sure your completed trailer and tow vehicle remain within their applicable weight ratings.

Building the Trailer for Our DIY Camper

The trailer is the first major stage of our homemade camper build. Getting the base assembled and ready allows us to move on to the next stages of construction.

As the project progresses, we’ll document the process of building the camper body, framing the walls, installing insulation, waterproofing the exterior, adding the electrical system, and finishing the interior.

The goal is to share the actual build process, including the materials used, practical lessons learned, and the decisions involved in turning a utility trailer into a functional homemade camper.

What’s Next in the Homemade Camper Build?

With the trailer serving as the foundation, the next stages focus on constructing the camper itself.

Follow along as we work through the build, including:

● Building the camper floor and wall framing.

● Installing the plywood walls and insulation.

● Applying epoxy and fiberglass to help protect the exterior.

● Installing the interior ceiling and electrical components.

● Building the rear galley and kitchen hatch.

● Preparing the camper for its first camping trips.

Each stage adds another piece to the project, and the finished camper will be the result of the entire process.
